Million Hours Fund - Application Summary

Here are all the questions we ask in the application form for Million Hours Fund. The guidance gives you more details about what you will need to tell us in your answers.

Section 1 - Your project

Please tell us about your project in this section. This is the most important section when it comes to making a decision about whether you will receive funding.

Tell us all the locations the project will run in

We need to know what ‘ward’ you’ll be running your project in. For example, ‘Feltham West’, ‘Moss Side’ or ‘Hexthorpe & Balby North’.

Include the ward code for each ward. For example ‘E05013614’ for Feltham West.

Only certain wards are eligible for funding.

You should visit our web page on the Million Hours fund to:

  • see how to find out which ward your project is in
  • check that your ward is eligible for funding.

If your project will take place across different locations, tell us all the wards it will cover.

If your activity is not in an eligible area, but young people from an eligible ward will come, tell us the name of that ward instead.

What is the postcode of where your project will take place?

If your project will take place across different locations, please use the postcode of the building or address where most of the project will take place. You must provide the full postcode.

If you do not know the postcode, you can use the Royal Mail Postcode Finder to try and find it.

Tell us the total cost of your project

This is the cost of everything related to your project, even things you're not asking us to fund.

For example:

  • If you're asking us for £40,000 and you're getting £20,000 from another funder to cover additional costs, your total project cost is £60,000.
  • If you're asking us for £40,000 and there are no other costs, your total project cost is £40,000.

How much money do you want from us?

Tell us when you'd like to get the money if you're awarded funding?

Don't worry, this can be an estimate.

For example, 27-09-2025

When will you spend the money by?

We expect you to use more of your funding near the start of the project. And all your funding must be spent by 31 March 2027.

What would you like to do?

Summarise what you’ll do with the funding, including:

  • what extra activities you’ll provide
  • which staff will run these extra hours and why
  • details of any new staff you’ll need
  • how much of this you’ll deliver before 31 March 2026, and how much will happen after (we expect you to use more of your funding near the start of the project)

Here’s what else you need to tell us in your answer.

Tell us how many extra hours of youth work you’ll provide, including:

  • the total extra hours
  • how many young people you expect to attend each hour
  • an approximate schedule of how you plan to deliver these extra hours

See our Million Hours fund web page for guidance and examples on how to calculate your extra hours.

Tell us how you’ll make your activities open to as wide a range of young people as possible (known as ‘open access’). For example young people should be able to:

  • come or go from sessions without telling you in advance
  • attend without committing to coming regularly or over a long period
  • take part without paying high entry fees
  • take part without having an existing level of skill
  • take part without following a particular religion or set of beliefs
  • access the venue you use easily

Tell us who’ll benefit from attending the extra hours of youth work. This can include young people you already work with. And other young people you want to try and reach.

Tell us how the extra hours will support young people most at risk of taking part in anti-social behaviour. Specifically how you’ll help them:

  • have improved emotional wellbeing
  • have improved life and practical skills
  • feel safer and have access to trusted relationships with adults

You can write up to 1250 words for this section. But it’s fine if you use fewer.

How does your idea fit in with other local activities?

Tell us why this work would especially benefit the young people where you are.

You could include what anti-social behaviour issues there are in your area.

Also tell us about other local services for young people at risk of anti-social behaviour. Including:

  • how your work will complement these services
  • any gaps in these services that your work will fill
  • what links you already have with these services, or other local organisations, that will help you to deliver the project

You can write up to 500 words for this section. But it’s fine if you use fewer.

How does your project involve young people?

Tell us how you’ll make sure young people have a voice in this work.

You can either:

  • fill in this answer yourself
  • ask young people you work with to fill in this answer

If young people do it, let us know they answered in the text.

You should try to answer these questions:

  • How do young people help decide what activities they do, and how the activities run?
  • Can you share any examples of when things changed because of a suggestion or idea a young person had? How did they share their suggestion? What happened afterwards?
  • Can young people get involved in how the organisation runs? Like joining the board, or helping the people that run the organisation plan what to do in the future. If yes, what do they have to do to get involved?
  • How do you think this extra involvement will benefit young people in your area?

You can write between 50 and 500 words for this section.

Why are you the right organisation to do this work?

Give us a brief description of your organisation and the work it does.

You should also tell us:

  • how your organisation’s experience and connections mean you’re the best people to do this work
  • how you keep people safe, respond to safeguarding incidents and promote a culture of safeguarding within your organisation
  • how this additional work will add value to what you already do, and complement the activities you already run for young people
  • how you currently engage with young people effectively
  • about any examples of when you were flexible, and helped a young person or group access your service when they otherwise could not
  • how you’ll engage young people in this work, including any who do not take part in your activities now
  • how you might keep this project going after our funding ends - including any fundraising or partnerships you’re planning.

You can write up to 700 words for this section. But it’s fine if you use fewer.

Section 2 - Extra details about your project

We want to understand more about where our funding is going.

Section 8 - Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) monitoring information

We want to hear more about the people who’ll benefit from your project and your organisation.

Question Guidance

Is your project aimed at a specific group of people or is it open to everyone?

If at least 75% of the people you support share characteristics, then your project is for a specific group.

Your specific group may share one or more characteristics. For example, if 80% of the people you work with are female refugees, this means you support a specific group of people. In this example, they share two characteristics — women and refugees.

We know this can only be an estimate. It’d be too difficult to work out exactly, especially if this is a new project.
